Build cross platform mobile application using Adobe Flash Builder

Recently I had attended a workshop from Adobe conducted at VIVANTA Trivandrum. The workshop all about Adobe & Mobile. On the occasion Adobe has nicely introduced Adobe Flash Builder with us. The introduction took around two hours though it is very interesting.

Whats new in Abode flash builder 4.5

Once you wrote the code, you can test it on the IDE itself or on the real phone or both.

The interesting thing is that we can edit the look and feel of the application using CSS3 (style sheet) and they have been supporting around 25 languages (including RTL support) for better comparability. Wp-nyro, A WordPress plugin for thickbox alternative

NyroModal is a jQuery plugin. You can use this as an alternate for Thickbox. Since Thickbox has stopped their support, I decided to use NyroModal. Today I developed a plugin for WordPress called wp-nyro.

Integrate nyroModal jquery plugin into your blogs. Open images and native galleries on the same window without touching the html code. Wp-nyro is very simple WordPress plugin. It can be easily integrate into your front-end blogs.

Integration

Once you have activated the plugin, it will open the images in the nyro modal. If you want to decide not to use this modal for a particular image you have the option in the backend. See the below attached figure.

In the plugin I have used jQuery which is already available with your WordPress installation and jquery.nyroModal.js.

BSNL Broadband disconnection problem solved

Last couple of months I had trouble with my BSNL broadband connection. The problem happens after upgrading my BSNL connection to multiplay. Multiplay connection offers you Internet Protocol television and video-on-demand to its broadband customers. Ok, what ever it is, my broadband connection sucked. It restarts every few minutes and become stable after 15-20 minutes. Even it become stable it may reset again after some time, may be when you are downloading some files.

I probed about my friends and others those who have using BSNL broadband. But nobody has this situation. I checked my connection settings and my broadband line is perfect and SNR is proper. I replaced my old modem with new one. I replaced the NIC with new one. Nothing helped me to solve the problem.

I played with the connection settings again followed by http://www.indiabroadband.net discussion forum. I tried the below suggestion.

After logged into the broadband settings through 192.168.1.1 with the username and password. (By default BSNL broadband modem username and password will be admin/admin).

Keep only GDMT/Glite/T413 Bitswap enabled.
Rest ADSL ADSL2+ etc uncheck.

I am not that techie to explain this. But this settings worked for me. Now no connection resetting. Now it is always on.

Xrefresh – An automated refresh tool for web developers

On Mac there is cool tool called CSSEdit, Which can write CSS lively and see the results without refreshing the browser. As I am using PC, I could not use this software. But I really wish if I could get one for PC that would be nice.

Couple of weeks back when I browsing through some website, I found Xrefresh, A software which will refresh the browser as you modify source file. And it will work on both Firefox and Internet Explorer. This software make it possible to do live page editing with your favorite HTML / CSS editor. It also supports mac.

If you have dual monitor, it makes you surprisingly easy to edit the files and see the results in real-time. And it not only useful for the HTML / CSS but also you can work with other programming language like PHP, Ruby, Perl, ASP , Java etc.

Installation

Installation is super easy.

Install Firebug 1.4 or higher
Install XRefresh Addon (you don’t need this step if you are going to use XRefresh with IE only).
Download Windows Monitor and go through installation process. It will install XRefresh traybar application and IE plugin.

Usage

Launch XRefresh and check for it in the traybar.

After start the icon is gray and it means that there are no browsers connected to XRefresh.

Tell XRefresh where are located your files. XRefresh will watch for your modifications.
Tip: You can simply drag&drop interesting folders onto configuration dialog.

Let Firefox or Internet Explorer connect to Xrefresh.

Firefox

XRefresh has its own tab panel in Firebug window. You need to enable Firebug for particular site to enable XRefresh functionality.

Internet Explorer

In Internet Explorer 7 you can find XRefresh icon in the tools bar

The icon reflects the connection status. You may click it to open XRefresh Panel

Managing 404, the wordpress way

Last time, when I change my blogs theme, I have missed some resources and URLs. It was not easy to find all elements in a web page. I already blogged about finding 404 elements, which is available here.

How to find the missed URLs easily?

It is easy to find the missed URLs. First of all we have to make sure that our blog or website has 404 page. Otherwise you can find how to create a 404 in wordpress blogs from here.

Now, after creating the 404, we can add a simple code snippet like this inside between the header and footer and should look like this.

What it will do?

For each 404 returns it will send email to your admin email account. It is simply cool right?

Solar eclipse 2010 – some experiments and pictures

Yesterday we have witnessed the solar eclipse. As an interested person, I also would like to see the various transitions of solar eclipse. As we know we can’t watch it with naked eyes.

How could I watch the solar eclipse safely?

I have tried some experiments that already published by some newspapers.

I have placed one mirror in my courtyard and reflect the sunlight to our room. I have placed hardboard that has a hole in between the mirror and the room. How simple it is!

Malayalam typing made easy with Google IME

For the couple of year back, it was very hard to type Malayalam on computers. For generating a single character we need to use combination of keys in some Malayalam softwares. It is very hard to remember the combination keys and it is time killing.

Earlier, Google has started Google transliteration for web interface. So it is very easy to type Malayalam in Blogger, Gmail, Knol, Orkut etc. Now Google has released a standalone software which you can download and install on your machine. So even if you don’t have internet connection you can type Malayalam.

Google Transliteration IME is an input method editor which allows users to enter text in one of the supported languages using a roman keyboard. Users can type a word the way it sounds using Latin characters and Google Transliteration IME will convert the word to its native script. Note that this is not the same as translation — it is the sound of the words that is converted from one alphabet to the other, not their meaning. Converted content will always be in Unicode.

Google Transliteration IME is currently available for 14 different languages – Arabic, Bengali, Farsi (Persian), Greek, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.

Indian Science congress – some pictures

Yesterday I visited Indian Science Congress exhibition at University of Kerala, Karyavattom. It is near to the technopark campus. This is the first time the Thiruvananthapuram hosts the Science congress and the second time in Kerala. It is quite interesting and it is a chance to general public to understand the science little more closely. The entry to the exhibition hall is free. (Even though it would be good to take your identity card along with you). A Kerala gramam has organised as the part of this. Here is some pictures which we took.

Last year I posted about downloading Malayalam calendar. I understood that it was very useful for Non resident Keralites. Today I have collected some resources for 2010 calendar. Hope this will be useful for you.

Kerala kaumudi web site has posted their calendar in PDF format. You can download it from here (http://www.keralakaumudi.com/cal2010/cal.pdf) It has in good format and looks good.
